Living abroad in Brixton, I sometimes miss my Persian roots. But South London’s streets are alive with reggae, from people blasting their speakers along the road to music spilling out of open windows. I was inspired to mix this sound with my Persian culture. The ney flute you hear plays a central role in Persian classical music. I hope you enjoy the blend of the two as it represents my home and my new home making a unique sound. Inspired by 1960s Persian funk covers, I chose this photo of my father from his time living in England. I complimented his hair and he said they were students and couldn’t afford haircuts so let their hair grow out and cut it themselves.
